During one of our recent interactions, a psychologist friend of mine brought up an interesting point of view. When it comes to jobs requiring empathy, machine automation would be of limited relevance. This triggered even larger questions. For someone like me, who has spent several years in automation and sensing technologies, can we quantitatively describe empathy or emotional behavioral skills? Can the augmentation of those skills be as straightforward as the augmentation of our physical abilities has been? What makes a qualitative decision different from a quantitative, analysis-based decision?
