Nearly half of healthcare providers have not begun implementing requirements for a federal interoperability rule that takes effect in just over a year, according to a new industry survey that suggests the sector faces significant challenges in meeting the Jan. 1, 2027 compliance deadline.

The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) released results of its October survey assessing readiness for CMS’s Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule, known as CMS-0057-F. The regulation mandates the use of APIs to increase data sharing and streamline prior authorization processes. Forty-seven percent of providers surveyed indicated they have not started implementation and testing, a modest improvement from 52 percent in WEDI’s previous survey conducted in January and February 2025.
