In recent years, health insurers have faced criticism for prior authorization requirements, where an insurer must approve a medical service before a patient receives it to ensure coverage. This summer, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated the agency will look to reduce and streamline prior authorization requirements and processes. Humana, one of the major health insurance companies, recently announced it will reduce about a third of its prior authorization requirements.

But how do prior authorizations currently intersect with diagnosis and treatment? And what might the landscape look like moving forward?
