Precision medicine promises to tailor health care to the individual. But what happens when entire communities are left out of the data that drives that tailoring?

When I embarked on cardiovascular epidemiology research, I never expected that my findings would cross the border of precision medicine. Let alone did I expect a rare heart mutation to show up so clearly in the community I belong to: Hispanic/Latinos of Dominican background.

What came initially as a shock quickly became an anchor for my commitment to advancing precision medicine in communities like my own, where risk is real, but recognition has been absent.
