In the summer of 2020, it was common to see hundreds of people lined up outside urgent care clinics that offered walk-in COVID-19 testing with same-day results. Many were traveling to states such as New Jersey or Massachusetts that required a negative test resulthe state, and urgent care clinics were among the few providers that offered rapid testing. The Food and Drug Administration approved the first at-home COVID-19 test in November 2020, and pharmacies soon became key distribution points for in-home tests paid for by the federal government. Distribution of tests and administration of vaccines in retail clinics and pharmacies in 2021 drove sales and foot traffic higher.
