The April 2024 issue of Health Affairs, focused on perinatal mental health, includes a rich and timely collection of articles across a broad spectrum of concerns in perinatal mental illness, but it also carries a dismal message. Rates of perinatal mental illness are increasing, while rates of screening, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment remain low and full of inequities. We can hold out hope from the news about the success of new screening methods or policy expansions that allow increased insurance coverage, but alas, there is no indication that funding will be available to continue or increase programs such as these in the future, especially in a moment of such a political uncertainty in our country.
