Tying financial incentives to drive EHR usability could be a key patient safety fix, according to Pew.

Improving EHR usability and tying it to financial incentives is essential to addressing patient safety, Pew Charitable Trusts wrote in a recent letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Since the 2009 passage of the HITECH Act, EHRs have seen nearly ubiquitous adoption, driving a digital transformation in healthcare. However, EHR usability has been an ongoing issue that has resulted in clinician burnout and patient harm.
