Private equity-owned hospices performed below not-for-profit hospices across all Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems hospice survey measures, according to a study published Nov. 18 in JAMA.

Researchers from Atlanta-based Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, New York City-based Weill Cornell Medical College, Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, both based in Nashville, analyzed CAHPS hospice data from between January 2021 and December 2022.

Here are six takeaways from the study:

  1. About half of all active hospice agencies in the U.S. were included in the study, which provided care to 87% of all Medicare hospice users during the study period.
