When the Surgeon General issues a warning, we’re accustomed to hearing about the dangers of smoking, alcohol, or obesity. These are concrete, actionable threats to our health. But now, the nation’s top doctor is warning us about something far more personal: parenting. This advisory may offer some parents comfort, by acknowledging their feelings of stress or exhaustion from the increased challenges of raising children. But for others, it might induce anxiety or even panic — what do you do when the very act of raising your child is labeled a potential hazard to your mental health?
