If a child loses her balance on a log, she will have to step off to avoid falling. Unbalanced tires on a car make for a bumpy ride and uneven tire wear. An engine failure on one wing of an airplane can be catastrophic.

Any system that is not in balance is doomed to failure. The US health care system is no exception. The warning signs are there: more people delaying or avoiding care because of costs; lagging gains in—or even diminishing—life expectancies; persistent disparities in outcomes based on race, ethnicity, income, and geography; and poor pandemic preparedness.
