If the goal was to make nutrition clearer, this new pyramid does the opposite
If I said there’s usually a flurry of excitement and questions for dietitians when the new dietary guidelines are released, I’d be lying. Most Americans don’t follow them closely, and since the recommendations are grounded in decades of research, they’ve historically rarely changed much from one cycle to the next.
But this year felt different. With highly publicized policy shifts coming out of the Department of Health and Human Services, I braced myself for questions from clients and friends about what had changed, what was credible, and what ultimately may need to shift on their plates.
