— We need to expand the scope of what it means to protect patients

A patient comes into the hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis and starts on intravenous fluids and insulin. But the care team accidentally administers twice the amount of insulin. When a drug is given incorrectly, there is no question that this is a patient safety event.

Similarly, the care we deliver contributes heavily to the climate crisis, which adversely affects population health — shouldn’t this be considered a patient safety event too? With the healthcare sector accounting for 8.5% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, we need to expand the scope of what it means to protect patients.
