— Senate hearing highlighted sharp divisions over the Affordable Care Act

Republican and Democratic senators were deeply divided at a hearing Thursday over what changes, if any, are needed to improve the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

“Lowering healthcare costs and providing more American citizens with affordable insurance and covering individuals with preexisting conditions are goals we all share,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said in his opening statement. “Unfortunately, Obamacare failed miserably at lowering costs and meeting enrollment goals.”

“That could have been done by relying on the benefits of consumerism and free market competition,” Johnson concluded. “By relying on those principles … we can repair the damage...
