Medical professionals believe the current hierarchy between physicians and nurses needs to be knocked down to improve clinician burnout and address EHR usability issues.

A more unified relationship between physicians and nurses could help address some of the EHR usability issues that have spurred on clinician burnout, according to an opinion piece written by two medical professionals in the New York Times.

Theresa Brown, a clinical faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and Stephen Bergman, a professor of medicine at New York University, said past and present perceptions of a power hierarchy between physicians and nurses has kept either part from working together to address EHR usability, a key driver of clinician burnout.
