NHS England will set up a national artificial intelligence lab to help improve the health and lives of patients as part of a £250 million funding boost.

Announced on Thursday, the lab will bring together academics, specialists and technology companies to enhance research into areas such as cancer detection, dementia treatments and personalized care.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the NHS is “leading the way in harnessing new technology to treat and prevent, from earlier cancer detection to spotting the deadly signs of dementia”.

He claimed that as well as improving the future of health care, the funding would also “boost the frontline by automating admin tasks and freeing up staff to care for patients”.
