Accounts of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare usually focus on the transformation of clinical care processes such as diagnosis and treatment. Many researchers, startups, and established technology firms are focused on curing cancer, developing precision medicine using genomic and other data, and automating medical image scanning. These are certainly worthy activities, and progress on them is being made, albeit more slowly than many would hope.

However, there is another side of healthcare that is equally deserving of the benefits of smart machines. It involves administrative and financial processes that support care delivery.
