New United States dietary guidelines announced last week by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasize a protein-rich diet. The guidance prioritizes animal sources such as red meat within the protein food group over plant-based items. This includes issuing controversial warnings to the public about potential nutrient gaps in predominantly plant-based vegetarian or vegan diets. More balanced public health messaging may be warranted.

Dietary guidelines are a cornerstone of federal food and nutrition policy, updated every five years to reflect changes in science. Healthcare providers and dietitians refer to them when advising patients. The guidance also informs school lunch menus.
