A new variant of the H5N1 bird flu has infected dairy cattle in Nevada, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. This specific genotype, D1.1, is distinct from the B3.13 genotype that spread in U.S. herds throughout last year.

The B3.13 version of the H5N1 bird flu virus was confirmed in March 2024 after being introduced to cattle in late 2023. This specific genotype has infected more than 950 herds in 16 states. The D1.1 version, on the other hand, was detected in milk during surveillance testing in December and has, for the first time, been found in infected dairy cattle.
