Medicare Advantage, the privatized health insurance that is becoming an increasingly popular choice of coverage for seniors, is accounting for “a rising share of inpatient hospital days,” according to a new study.

KFF, formerly known as the Kaiser Family Foundation, says in a new report nearly half, or 48%, of all Medicare inpatient hospital days were attributable to Medicare Advantage enrollees in what “has implications for beneficiaries and health care providers.”

The study shows the increasing clout of private health insurers in administering Medicare and how it could potentially impact patient choice as well as the operations of hospitals, physician practices and other providers of medical care.
