TOPLINE:

Medicaid expansion was associated with improved 5‑year cause‑specific and overall survival among patients living in rural or high‑poverty communities and those diagnosed with pancreatic, lung, or colorectal cancer.

METHODOLOGY:

  • Medicaid expansion in 2014 increased eligibility for lower-income adults, reduced uninsurance, improved access to cancer screening, and improved 2-year overall survival among patients newly diagnosed with cancer. However, data on longer-term cancer survival have been lacking.
  • Researchers used a North American population‑based cancer registry data to identify over 1.4 million US adults (age, 18-59 years) who were diagnosed with cancer between 2007 and 2008 or 2014 and 2015. They resided in 26 states that expanded Medicaid in 2014 and 12 states that had not expanded eligibility as of 2020.
