The United States is facing a worsening maternal health crisis, with rising rates of preventable deaths and persistent inequities across race, income, and geography. Medicaid, which finances more than 40 percent of births nationally, is at the center of this story. Recent federal proposals to restrict Medicaid eligibility and reduce state financing flexibility would have profound consequences for pregnant and postpartum people, their families, and their communities.
