On May 1, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published landmark regulations to improve health data access and interoperability for patients, providers, and app developers, using a standardized application programming interface (API) infrastructure. This new rule implements provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act of 2016. In concept, the regulations take a giant leap forward. In practice, they might fall short of the nation’s goals.
