It’s inevitable now that the U.S. will suffer a historic loss in January 2026—the loss of measles elimination status that it had worked so hard to achieve in 2000. That’s because the total number of reported measles cases in the U.S. for 2025 in late December 2025 ballooned well past the 2000 mark—meaning the number and not the year—based on data from the Johns Hopkins University Measles Tracker. And since only 167 of the 2,071 cases listed in the measles tracker as of December 31 were imported from other countries, you can’t blame people from other countries for the current mess.
