It has been nearly two decades since the Institute of Medicine named “patient-centered care” as one of six fundamental aims of the US health care system. Since that time, a growing body of research has demonstrated a positive association between patient experience and enhanced clinical outcomes, improved patient safety, and reduction in unnecessary use of medical services. The elevation of patient-centeredness as a national health policy priority also has led to numerous initiatives requiring the use of patient experience measures for public reporting, value-based purchasing, accreditation, certification, and recognition programs.
