— Take note of new ICD-10, CPT codes and be sure systems work

Doctors, nurses, and other health clinicians have their hands full battling the COVID-19 pandemic, especially when it comes to getting personal protective equipment and taking care of themselves. But there’s one thing that clinician offices may not be considering: the virus’s effect on their electronic health record (EHR) system.

To begin with, how should clinicians code for a COVID-19 test? “Believe it or not, as of April 1, they have developed an ICD-10 code for this virus — ‘U07.1 , COVID-19,'” said Jay Anders, MD, chief medical officer of Medicomp Systems, a health information technology company in Chantilly, Virginia.
