When Congress voted to torpedo the widely hated Sustainable Growth Rate formula (SGR) in 2015, it created an 11-member committee to give physicians a stronger voice in determining how Medicare pays them.
The Physician-focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC), a group of physician and non-physician policy experts, solicits and evaluates new physician-focused payment models.
While the PTAC cannot unilaterally approve new models, it sends “comments and recommendations” to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, who decides whether to implement them, according to the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, which oversees PTAC.
