Abstract

Payers in Massachusetts hope to use the principles of value-based care and pay-for-performance to reduce health care disparities.

On a beautiful July morning in Massachusetts, as tourists milled about Boston Common on their way to visit Revolutionary War landmarks, about a hundred representatives of health insurers gathered in downtown Boston’s Prudential Center. As they arrived in a spacious, industrial meeting room in the headquarters of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA), those who knew each other hugged while others introduced themselves. Many came from the Boston area, but some had traveled from as far as Hawaii, Oregon, and Florida to attend a two-day Health Equity Methods Retreat.
