The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) recently announced the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) Model, a voluntary test program designed to benefit people living with dementia (PLWD) and their unpaid caregivers. GUIDE aims to improve comprehensive dementia care, mitigate the burdens placed on caregivers, and enable PLWD to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible. These are tremendously important goals for patients, their caregivers, and the health system. More than seven million people live with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in the US, a number expected to grow to an estimated 14 million by 2060. It is imperative that we build better systems to care for this vulnerable and expanding population.
