A bit like a solo driver who sneaks into the commuter lane, hoping not to get caught, some companies are misrepresenting their purpose for accessing your medical records. Misuse of health data, though, has a much more serious consequence: use of your data for purposes that neither you nor your doctor realized or authorized.

How do your medical records end up as fuel for a lucrative data marketplace? Federal health data privacy rules, known as HIPAA, protect medical records and establish conditions for when they can be accessed, used, and disclosed for a range of purposes. If these conditions are met, your records can be disclosed.
