Social media content moderation: a brief for clinicians.

COMMENTARY

Social media apps hold massive power and influence. Its effects on youth mental health are complex, multiple, and individual-dependent. While it can be a great place for connection and self-expression, it can also be a place where youth encounter harmful content. Questions ranging from who can exert content moderation to who has access to the data of billions of users to whether the apps should be banned altogether have recently surfaced. The Supreme Court case involving Florida and Texas’ attempts to ban content moderation by the platform are highly relevant to child psychiatrists because of the complex relationship between social media use and youth mental health.
