The coronavirus pandemic has exposed many of the glaring weaknesses in our health care system, while at the same time highlighting many of its strengths, such as our leadership in medical research, innovations in biopharmaceuticals, and a highly skilled and very dedicated health care work force.
This blog post focuses on one of the most serious weaknesses—the antiquated information technology (IT) that has blocked people from getting their unemployment insurance benefits and could create similar barriers to the large number of people becoming newly eligible for Medicaid due to sharply rising unemployment. The old-fashioned IT systems can be seen against the background of glaring gaps in eligibility and coverage, insufficient coordination across programs separated by silos, and chronic underfunding.
