Affordable health care is increasingly out of reach for people who get insurance through their employers, including most people younger than age 65. While low-income employees are among the most vulnerable, the majority of Americans, and most of their employers as well, now say health costs, especially out-of-pocket costs for medical care, are the country’s most urgent health issue. In 2023, most employer-sponsored plans included a deductible; the average deductible in 2023 for single coverage among plans with a deductible was about $1,700. Compare that with surveys showing that one-third of Americans would have trouble paying a $400 medical bill. It should be no surprise, then, that nearly one-third of adults with employer-sponsored insurance have medical or dental debt.
