Minneapolis-based Allina Health plans to combat the national nursing shortage through various long-term initiatives, including improved orientation programs, developing programs for nurse leadership and establishing an RN residency program.

In the near term, the 12-hospital system has established sub-initiatives dedicated to compensation management, talent acquisition optimization, improved retention and more efficient agency utilization, according to financial documents published Feb. 14.

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing and Allina recently signed an academic-practice partnership to help improve nursing practice, education and patient outcomes.
