Bhutan and Suriname are the only countries in the world that have achieved net zero, thanks largely to unique factors. Each country’s population is less than 800,000 and they both have extensive forests that act as a carbon sink.
Most other countries lack the same attributes and have larger populations, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to achieve a similar goal. Currently, 124 countries have pledged carbon neutrality by 2050, and over 500 companies have pledged to become net zero by 2040. Unsurprisingly, energy-producing firms face mounting pressure to rapidly decarbonize.
