Hospitals for the first time could be asked to report their greenhouse gas emissions to the federal health department.

Why it matters: A new Medicare proposal to collect that data is a “game changer” for hospital efforts to fight climate change, the head of Health and Human Services’ climate office told Axios.

  • The health care system produces 8.5% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions — a third of which comes from hospitals — and has faced pressure to reduce its carbon footprint as the effects of climate change threaten hospital operations and patients’ health.
