In the newly released HBO Max show “The Pitt,” a seasoned emergency physician (played by Noah Wyle, now a long way from his role in “ER”) complains to a hospital administrator about having to provide substandard care to patients in hallways, with patients coding in waiting rooms. The administrator responds by stating, “Boarding is a national problem.” This is true. Hospital boarding in the emergency department (ED)—holding admitted hospital patients in the ED due to a shortage of inpatient hospital beds—is a long-standing and national problem that continues to worsen in the post-pandemic era. However, there is renewed attention to the issue and initiatives at the federal, state, and private-sector levels to address it.
