Spending on pricey wound care products reached $10 billion in 2024
The HHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) called out sky-high spending on pricey skin substitutes and voiced concerns about potential waste, fraud, and abuse in a report released earlier this month.
Spending on skin substitutes for the treatment of chronic wounds has soared over the last 2 years, reaching more than $10 billion in 2024 — more than 15% of the $66 billion in total spending for all Medicare Part B drugs that year, according to the HHS watchdog. (Part B generally covers medically necessary services and supplies, as well as certain outpatient prescription drugs and vaccines.)
