The FDA’s Office of Strategic Programs was among the casualties in today’s early-morning layoffs that hit staff across the Department of Health and Human Services.

Director Sridhar Mantha was among those cut. Mantha co-chaired the AI Council at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which helped develop policy around artificial intelligence use in drug development and assisted the FDA in using AI internally.

Big picture: Overnight, HHS employees lost their jobs as part of a reduction in force that aims to cut 10,000 of the department’s approximately 80,000 workers. The cuts hit staff across agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.
