Healthcare providers, insurers and their business associates in May reported 16 data breaches to the federal government—the lowest number of data breaches reported in a single month since January 2016.

That’s despite a spate of coronavirus-related cyberattacks that healthcare organizations have reportedly experienced during the pandemic.

The 16 data breaches affecting more than 191,000 patients in May, according to data from HHS’ Office for Civil Rights. That’s down 68.6% from 51 data breaches reported in May of last year, which affected more than 2 million people.

In April 2020, organizations reported 38 data breaches that exposed data on nearly 453,000 people.
