Health systems are centralizing oversight of ambulatory care and shifting volume to clinics, virtual platforms, and home-based programs as they chase growth and relieve inpatient pressure, according to a new report from the Center for Connected Medicine (CCM) at UPMC and KLAS Research.
Ambulatory decision-making is increasingly housed with executives who hold system-wide authority, the report said. Structures vary—from standalone ambulatory divisions to medical-group or service-line models—but the aim is consistent: align access, efficiency, and long-term sustainability across sites. Most organizations staff ambulatory clinics with dedicated teams to preserve continuity; limited “float” pools move among sites as needed, according to the report.
