Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment has grown substantially in recent years, surpassing traditional fee-for-service Medicare enrollment for the first time in 2023. At the same time, there has been substantial consolidation of practitioners and provider organizations into larger organizations across the health sector. We have previously described the consolidation of hospitals and physicians to form integrated health systems, and others have reported similar trends not just among provider organizations, but between provider organizations or health systems and MA plans.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Compendium of US Health Systems, a publicly available database containing information on US health systems and providers, is the most current publicly available longitudinal source of data on health system ownership of MA plans,...
