HHS will need to better support meaningful health data exchange and stronger, more secure health IT use in the upcoming year, according to OIG.

Health IT use and data exchange are top challenges for HHS in the upcoming year, according to a recent report from the Office of Inspector General.

The annual report, which names the top management and performance issues the agency will face in 2017, states that healthcare experts still have several challenges to overcome concerning health IT use.

“Health IT, including electronic health records (EHRs), offers opportunities for improved patient care, more efficient practice management, and improved overall public health,” OIG wrote. “However, HHS continues to face a number of significant challenges in this information-rich environment.”
