In August 2023, the CDC reported that around 49,499 people died by suicide in the United States in 2022. This is 2.6% higher than the estimated 48,183 suicide deaths reported in 2021.[1] For comparison, 48,183 deaths in 2021 translated to one death for every eleven minutes.[2] When reflecting on this new statistic, Xavier Becerra, the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, remarked, “Nine in ten Americans believe America is facing a mental health crisis. The new suicide death data reported by CDC illustrates why. One life lost to suicide is one too many. Yet, too many people still believe asking for help is a sign of weakness. [….] We must continue to eliminate the stigmatization of mental health...
