In the context of the new federal administration, sweeping immigration enforcement actions have begun in communities across the country. What remains unknown is whether immigration enforcement will increasingly occur within health care settings, creating a pressing ethical dilemma for health care institutions whose mission is fundamentally to promote health and wellbeing.
Immigration policies and enforcement are directly related to health outcomes. Restrictive immigration enforcement is associated with worsened health outcomes (e.g. birth outcomes, mental health and health risk behaviors) and reduced health-seeking behavior (e.g. lapses in care and delayed care).
