President Donald Trump wants doctors and insurers to make it easier for patients to get access to their own health data. Not so easy, says Aimee Cardwell, the former chief information security officer for UnitedHealthcare.

In July, some 60 companies, including major payers Aetna, Elevance Health, Humana, and UnitedHealth Group, pledged to share patient data with one another and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services by early next year. The commitments are part of a broader effort by CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz to improve the health of Medicare and Medicaid patients using health focused apps and fitness wearables to manage their chronic conditions.
