HCA Healthcare’s purchase of MD Now Urgent Care’s network of outpatient centers intensifies the hot market for doctor-staffed primary care.

HCA, the largest investor-owned operator of hospitals in the U.S., is buying in MDNow a network of 59 urgent care centers in Florida for an undisclosed sum. HCA said the deal, which was completed at the end of last year but announced Tuesday, significantly “expands HCA Healthcare’s reach as one of the nation’s leading providers of urgent care, currently operating more than 170 clinics across 19 markets.”

But more broadly the acquisition ups the ante in the suddenly hot primary care market and bidding for doctor-staffed outpatient centers with Walgreens investing more than $5 billion in VillageMD to escalate the...
