TRENDS FROM THE TRENCHES—Lihua Yu began her training as a biomedical engineer during her undergraduate studies, but for her Ph.D. training, she chose to study in the lab of Dr. Temple Smith, a pioneer in computational biology at Boston University, despite being warned that this field had minimal job prospects. She didn’t know much about molecular biology then but recognized that Dr. Smith would be a strong mentor and was intrigued by his comment about needing a fresh pair of eyes to look at a problem the lab was focusing on: protein structure prediction.
