Researchers are working on a device that can be easily placed in the ear at home to aid in the early detection of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. It involves a convenient ear-EEG device that can be easily placed in the ear, similar to an in-ear headphone. The device measures the brain’s electrical activity and maps sleep patterns. Changes in this activity can be a significant predictor for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Dementia (with Alzheimer’s being the most common form) and Parkinson’s are rapidly increasing in an aging world. Based on population studies, an estimated 290,000 people had dementia and approximately 50,000 had Parkinson’s in the Netherlands in 2021.
