Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as one of the “godfathers” of artificial intelligence, believes there is a 10% to 20% chance that AI could drive humanity to extinction within thirty years. Speaking on BBC Radio 4, the British-Canadian computer scientist stated, “we’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before. And how many examples do you know of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing?”.
