Two pieces of news this week underscore how rapidly consumer technology companies are integrating their products and customer data with healthcare platforms.

Fitness tracker company Fitbit announced on Tuesday that it will acquire Twine Health, a coaching platform designed to help people achieve better health outcomes and enable health systems, health plans and workplace health providers to lower healthcare costs.

That same day, Apple CEO Tim Cook assured investors at the technology giant’s annual shareholders meeting that the company is well-positioned to succeed in the healthcare sector. Not only is Apple aggressively developing wellness apps and devices for consumers, it has launched a pilot program with 12 hospitals to allow patients to access their medical records with iPhones.
